The Cyprus Association of Social Anthropologists (CASA) and the Conference: Our Common Grounds: Pasts, Presents, Futures of Anthropology in Cyprus
As the community of social anthropologists of Cyprus who have been researching in various fields of cultures, human behaviours, and societies for years, we are honoured to announce that the Cyprus Association of Social Anthropologists (CASA) (EL: Σύλλογος Κοινωνικών Ανθρωπολόγων Κύπρου (ΣΚΑΚY) – TR: Kıbrıs Sosyal Antropologlar Derneği (KSAD) is established as a non-profit association. CASA is a growing community of scholars, practitioners, and students who are from Cyprus, work in and οn Cyprus, or engage critically with social, cultural, and political issues related to the island and the wider Eastern Mediterranean.
As a multilingual, intercommunal association, informing, publicising, developing, and disseminating the scientific field of Social/Cultural Anthropology and promoting anthropological knowledge, research, and ethics both within and beyond the university sphere, throughout Cyprus, as well as promoting Cyprological anthropological research internationally and raising public awareness on matters relating to Social/Cultural Anthropology and anthropological research are some of our priorities.
In this regard, we are hosting a two-day conference as our first event, titled Our Common Grounds: Pasts, Presents, Futures of Anthropology in Cyprus, to bring together the community of anthropologists, ethnographers, researchers, artists, students, and interested parties in Cyprus. The conference in co-organized with the Cyprus University of Technology, and the programme includes a wide range of activities: 10 parallel panels to discuss topics in anthropology, history, archive studies, archaeology, arts, performance, a visual anthropology section, and more. The keynote speech will be delivered by Professor Rebecca Bryant (Utrecht University), titled “The eyes of the World are on us”: Geopolitical Intensities and the Anthropology of Cyprus.
Moreover, the CASA Lifetime Contribution Award will be presented to Professor Vassos Argyrou for his sustained and significant contributions to the discipline in and from Cyprus.
CASA’s launch event, A Conversation on Past, Present, Futures of Anthropology in Cyprus, will be held during the conference. This public conversation brings together anthropologists across generations to reflect on what anthropology in and from Cyprus has been, what it is today, and where it might go. The launch event is for the public and free of charge.
The conference will be held at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) in Limassol on 4th-5th of September 2026.
